Backset- Backset is the
distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole. This
distance affects the latch-size for door hardware. A standard door usually
comes with a 2-3/8 inch backset, but you can also order hardware for doors
with a 2-3/4 inch backset. |
 |
The door-prep image to the left applies to interior passage and
privacy sets, key-in knobs or levers, and deadbolts. The bore hole is
2-1/8 inches in diameter. The center of the bore hole is located either
2-3/8" or 2-3/4" back from the edge of the door (this is the backset
dimension). |

Door Swing - The swing of a door is
either an "in-swing" or an "out-swing." It all depends on what you have
decided to be the outside and/or inside of your door. Door swing is
important mainly for entry sets, mortises, or other exterior door hardware. |
|
To determine door swing: |
1. Stand where you have decided the outside of the door is. |
| |
(For example, if it's a bathroom door, stand outside of
the bathroom) |
| |
2. When you go to open the door, if it swings into the
room, then it is an in-swing door |
| |
3. If it swings out-ward (you have to pull it toward
you), then it is an out-swing door |

Handing - The
handing of a door is either Right-Hand or Left-Hand. It depends on what you
have decided to be the outside and/or inside of your door. Handing is
required information for all passage, privacy, and patio function levers,
and for all entry sets or mortises. |
|
To determine handing: |
1. Stand where you have decided the outside of the door is. (For
example, if it's a bathroom door, stand outside of the bathroom.) |
| |
2. Look to see as to which side of the door the hinges are located. |
| |
- If the hinges are on the right, it is a Right-Hand door. |
| |
- If the hinges are on the left, it is a Left-Hand door. |
| |
- It does not matter which way the door swings |
