Help and Information

Backset- Backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole. This distance affects the latch-size for door hardware. A standard door usually comes with a 2-3/8 inch backset, but you can also order hardware for doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset.

The door-prep image to the left applies to interior passage and privacy sets, key-in knobs or levers, and deadbolts. The bore hole is 2-1/8 inches in diameter. The center of the bore hole is located either 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" back from the edge of the door (this is the backset dimension).

Door Swing - The swing of a door is either an "in-swing" or an "out-swing." It all depends on what you have decided to be the outside and/or inside of your door. Door swing is important mainly for entry sets, mortises, or other exterior door hardware.

To determine door swing:

1. Stand where you have decided the outside of the door is.
(For example, if it's a bathroom door, stand outside of the bathroom)
  2. When you go to open the door, if it swings into the room, then it is an in-swing door
  3. If it swings out-ward (you have to pull it toward you), then it is an out-swing door

Faceplate - The faceplate is the metal plate that surrounds the latch. It can have rounded or square corners.

Functions - Door Knob and Lever Functions:
Passage: Privacy: Key-In: Dummy:

(Single Dummy)

(Dummy Pair)

Passage sets have a latch and are typically used for hallway, closet, or other general entrance doors.

Privacy sets have a latch and can be locked from the inside and have a small tool to unlock it; Typically used for bathrooms or bedrooms.

Key-In door knobs and levers are keyed on one side and have a lock button on the other. Typical use is for exterior doors or any door requiring keyed entrance.

Dummy sets have no latching and no locking feature. Most dummy sets are ordered in pairs. Typical use is for closets, double doors, etc.

-Entry Set Functions:
Single Cylinder: Double Cylinder:

Dummy Entry Set:

Single cylinder entry sets are keyed only from the outside.

Double cylinder entry sets are keyed both on the outside and inside.

Dummy entry sets have no latching, locking, or keying feature. They are typically used for double doors.

-Deadbolt Functions:
Single Cylinder Deadbolt: Double Cylinder Deadbolt

Single cylinder deadbolts are keyed on one side and have a latch turn on the other side. Double cylinder deadbolts are keyed alike on both sides.

Handing - The handing of a door is either Right-Hand or Left-Hand. It depends on what you have decided to be the outside and/or inside of your door. Handing is required information for all passage, privacy, and patio function levers, and for all entry sets or mortises.

To determine handing:

1. Stand where you have decided the outside of the door is. (For example, if it's a bathroom door, stand outside of the bathroom.)
  2. Look to see as to which side of the door the hinges are located.
  - If the hinges are on the right, it is a Right-Hand door.
  - If the hinges are on the left, it is a Left-Hand door.
  - It does not matter which way the door swings

Keying Options - The following keying options are available for any hardware requiring a key:
  1. "Keyed Alike" means ONE key will be able to open ALL of your locks ordered under this specification
  2. "All Keyed Differently" means any number of keys can open any number of your locks based on your special instructions
  3. "Custom Keying" allows you to use a key code or mail us a copy of a key you already have and would like to use for your new hardware. If you select custom keying, please make full use of the "special instructions" text box before checkout to let us know exactly how you would like your hardware keyed. If you are sending us a copy of your key, please allow up to 3 additional days for the shipping of your hardware.

Strikeplate - The strike plate is the metal plate that is installed on the door jamb and is what the latch "strikes" when the door closes.

  • The following strikeplates are available for ordering:
  • Full-Lip Square-Corner strikeplates come standard with all interior door knob / door lever orders unless specified otherwise
